Danzu River is one of the tributaries of Tenryu River which is also one of the main flows of Old Tenryu River. This steam between Nagasakabashi Bridge and Tomitsuka Ohashi Bridge is well known as one of the most popular cherry viewing sites in Hamamatsu. It is only within ten minutes downhill walk from Wajiyama Park located between the university and a library.
After enjoying the walk along the levee with cherry trees I went further to the Tomitsuka hill lesser known park with weeping cherries. After visiting the park I returned to Hamamatsu Station with Line 8 Entetsu bus.

Monument to Commemorate Emperor's Viewing of Military Training

The area including neighboring Shizuoka University Hamamatsu Campus and this park used to be the military training grounds for Japanese Imperial Army (67th division made up of infantry soldiers formed in 1907) until 1945 when Japan lost the second world war. This huge monument was set up to commemorate the Emperor's viewing of the military training. This area also has some nice branched pine trees planted in 1968 to celebrate 100th anniversary of Meiji Restoration and an unknown Shinto shrine could have been private shinto shrine for the military academy. There is also a playground for small children.

Muiti-purpose Ground

This multi-purpose ground is often used for the community meetups or gateball events for senior citizens. There used to have the main office of Hamamatsu City Bus which ended its service in 1984.

Nagasakabashi Bridge

Going down the slope from the south end of the park, you will find the narrow stream called Danzu River, one of the former main flows of Old Tenryu River. Today much part of its river flow originates from Hamana Aqueduct tapping the water resource from the Tenryu River main flow to reduce the nagging water pollution of its flow and to Lake Sanaru where the river ends. Nagasakabashi Bridge is often the start of sakura walking viewing the excellently branched cherry trees lined alongside the river for about 500 to 600 meters.
