Descrizione dell'itinerario

The Liyangahawela to Amba Trail is a stunning downhill hike through Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, offering a perfect blend of tea plantations, eucalyptus forests, remote villages, ancient temples, and breathtaking valley views. This moderate hike takes you from high-altitude tea estates down into lush valleys, leading to hidden rock pools atop the Ravana Falls, before ascending to Amba Estate, where hikers can relax with a well-earned cup of artisanal tea.

The trail begins at Liyangahawela, winding through expansive tea plantations, where neat rows of tea bushes stretch across the hillsides. As the path descends, the landscape transitions into a dense eucalyptus forest, where the fresh scent of eucalyptus fills the air, and towering trees create a cool, shaded walk.

Exiting the forest, hikers pass through a small rural village, offering a glimpse into local life in the Uva highlands. A picturesque Hindu or Buddhist temple along the way provides a peaceful resting spot, with its intricate carvings and quiet surroundings adding a cultural touch to the trek.

As the trail continues, it saddles two valleys, opening up to stunning panoramic views of the Amba Valley. The rolling tea country, misty ridges, and deep valleys make for one of the most breathtaking sections of the hike. On a clear day, the vast landscape unfolds dramatically, making it a perfect place to stop for photos.

The descent leads hikers through the remnants of an old colonial-era tea estate, where abandoned estate buildings and stone pathways hint at the region’s plantation history. As the trail nears Ravana Falls, it reveals a hidden series of rock pools—a secluded paradise for a refreshing swim before the final stretch of the hike. These crystal-clear pools atop the waterfall offer an unforgettable natural plunge, surrounded by jungle and the distant sound of cascading water.

After cooling off in the rock pools, the trail ascends gradually through Amba Estate, passing organic tea fields and spice gardens. The hike ends at Amba Farm, a renowned artisanal tea and spice farm, where hikers can enjoy a fresh cup of organic Amba tea and delicious farm-to-table treats, making for a perfect ending to the adventure.

Safety Considerations
The trail includes steep and uneven sections and weather conditions can change rapidly, so it's essential to wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry adequate water. Leeches are common in humid conditions, so applying leech repellent or wearing protective socks is recommended. Since some sections pass through dense forests, it’s advisable to hike in groups and inform someone of your route. If hiking during early mornings or late afternoons, be aware that mist can reduce visibility. Lastly, always respect local communities and wildlife, keeping the trail clean and undisturbed for future visitors.
