Descrizione dell'itinerario

This scenic trail begins just outside the small hill town of Balaketuwa, a short drive from Ella. The hike starts at the 7th-mile post before entering the town and gradually climbs through a series of ridges and estate roads. Balaketuwa itself sits quietly tucked away in the hills and serves as a peaceful starting point for this journey.

As you ascend, you're rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Namunukula mountain range, a prominent peak in the region that rises over 2,000 meters. Known as the "Nine Peaks," Namunukula is sacred to local communities and offers a majestic backdrop for much of the trail. The views from the ridgeline above Ella are unforgettable — mist-covered valleys, rows of tea bushes, and layers of blue hills stretching to the horizon.

The route continues through tea estates, shaded by magnificent trees, and passes several small kovils (Hindu shrines) — a reminder of the spiritual life of the tea estate communities. The path is mostly along well-maintained tea estate roads, making it accessible yet immersive.

The trail concludes in the historic railway village of Demodera, famous for the Demodera Loop — a marvel of early 20th-century railway engineering where the train track loops over itself in a spiral before emerging from a tunnel beneath the station. It's one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic rail features and a fitting end to a hike full of history, nature, and tea-country charm.

Safety Considerations
The trail includes steep and uneven sections and weather conditions can change rapidly, so it's essential to wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry adequate water. Leeches are common in humid conditions, so applying leech repellent or wearing protective socks is recommended. Since some sections pass through dense forests, it’s advisable to hike in groups and inform someone of your route. If hiking during early mornings or late afternoons, be aware that mist can reduce visibility. Lastly, always respect local communities and wildlife, keeping the trail clean and undisturbed for future visitors.
