Descrizione dell'itinerario
This is a circular tour based on Thorner, which can be reached by the 7 bus that goes between Leeds and Harrogate; there is ample on-road parking in this attractive village. The village also boasts three public houses: The Mexborough Arms, The Fox and The Beehive; the bus stops opposite the Fox, where I started the tour by walking down Main Street.
At the bottom of Main Street, I took Westfield Lane at the start of which is a ford.
Past Carr Farm, the path goes across fields before emerging through a hedge where there is a clear track going left or right. I went across the fields which was not the right thing to do. The track should be followed left round the field and will eventually come out at Birkby Grange. If the track to the right is taken, this should come out on Carr Lane, which will save some hiking.
On Carr Lane the road/bridleway through the pillars leading to Eltofts Farm is taken. Opposite Eltofts House is a footpath which is taken leading down to Kidhurst Wood.
The stretch through the wood is very pleasant and there is a small lake in the wood with private fishing. Just past the lake there is a gate that leads on to the footpath back towards Thorner.
Chapel Walk, a pretty little alley way with hedging both sides, off Carr Lane, leads back to the centre of the village.
There are eight stiles along the way. At this time of the year, some of the paths are very muddy.
