This hiking trail is one of the best and most diverse in the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia. It leads to historical landmarks, including the Smbataberd Fortress, Tsakhats Kar Monastery, and Zorats Church. At the end of the route, you can see a medieval Jewish cemetery.
When to go?
✅ Recommended:
The best time to hike this trail is from late April to early June and from October to December. In spring, from late April to June, the area is covered in greenery and wildflowers, with peak blooming in May. From mid-October to early December, the landscape turns golden, and the temperature remains comfortable for hiking in these mountains.
❌Not recommended:
The trail is not suitable for hiking during the hot season due to high temperatures and increased snake activity.
During the snowy months, the route offers breathtaking views. In winter, you can shorten the hike to Smbataberd, enjoy the stunning view from the fortress walls, and then return to the village of Yeghegis.
*The trail is mostly unmarked, so be sure to bring a GPS.
