A brief and not excessively tiring excursion from Madeira's third highest summit, Pico do Arierio (1818m), reachable by car and endowed with a parking place, a restaurant, and an air force RADAR installation, to Madeira's highest, Pico Ruivo (1862m).
The one-way path is signalled and absolutely easy to follow and allows the hiker to enjoy breathtaking panoramas, very different from the ones I am used to behold in the Alps. Clearly, in order to do so, there must be no fog or low-level clouds.
In my opinion, everyone with a minimum training is able to do this trek. The only pieces of advice I fell obliged to give is to bring a headlamp or a torch, as you will traverse some pitch dark tunnels, avoid rainy days, as the path becomes utterly slippery, and make sure nobody in your group suffers from vertigo.
