This walk is quite a killer (especially in wintertime); more 30 km with a total ascent of more than a 1000 meters. The first 2-3 hours are the most stunning with spectacular views over Patterdale, the remote Angel Tarn and the series of high peaks towards Haweswater. I did this walk on a snowy day in December and forgot to take crampons with me; please don't make the same mistake, there are some nasty drop-offs around Rampsgillhead. After that bit, things ease down, although the descent towards the lake is quite steep. You're not there yet; prepare for a mind-numbingly walk along the shores of Haweswater. The last stretch towards Shap is much better with extremely scenic farmland.
