--
This loop trail goes to the 2nd highest peak on Dugi Otok. The highest peak (Vela straža) is located a bit to the south, and is occupied by a military installation and thus inaccessible to the public.
The trailhead is at the only main road on the island, the D109. the spot to park is a big gravel lot roughly in between the villages Luka and Savar. Parking is of course free. The lot is easily recognizable by having a big solar panel installation. The spot also doubles as a nice viewpoint.
Leave the car there, and cross the road to some old abandoned structures, where you can choose the direction in which to follow the trail. We suggest going to Strašna peć (cave) first and then up towards Orljak, to avoid descending on the steep karst rocks. The trail takes you around the western part of the island on a gravel road, and the views are beautiful. You may even encounter some wild goats here, if you're lucky.
Strašna peć is usually open only in the summer months, so we just peeked through the doors. From Strašna peć, climb the karst rocks until you reach the top. This is physically and technically the most demanding part of the trail. At some points you may require to use your hands to climb certain parts, but nothing too dangerous. Basic hiking equipment is more than enough. From the top, continue towards Orljak which is seen to the east of here.
Orljak offers a beautiful 360° view of the surrounding islands. From there, the descent is straightforward enough. Take it easy and enjoy the views.
Waypoint

Car park
Gravel parking lot off the D109 state road. Houses a big solar panel installation and a bicycle repair kit station. Also a viewpoint. Parking is free. No shade. Across the road is the trailhead and also some abandoned constructions, once being part of a now disused quarry.

Intersection #1 / go right
On this fork, go right to start on the gravel road which will lead you to Strašna peć (cave). The scenery here is amazing.

Strašna peć
Strašna peć (eng. Scary cave) is a cave, a local attraction. It's on private property, and is open only in the summer months. Entrance is supposedly paid, with the entrance being barred by a steel doors.

Intersection #2 / go right / to 'Orljak'
At this intersection, follow the direction towards Orljak. You will come back to this spot on your return trip and go towards the old quarry (Kamenolom).

Orljak (301 m)
The 2nd highest peak on the island, and the highest accessible by the public. It's not that high, objectively speaking, but since you're on an island you get an amazing 360° view of Dugi otok and the surrounding islands.
Intersection #3 / go left
