Today, we tackled the Vereda do Pico Ruivo (PR1.2), a trail leading to the highest peak in Madeira (1,862m). Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on our side. It seemed fine before we started, but as we ascended, we were met with thick fog, drizzle, and cold winds. At the top, it was raining heavily and much colder than expected.
What to Expect:
- Distance: Around 5.8 km round trip (depending on your starting point).
- Terrain: A mix of rocky paths, uneven steps, and some steep sections. Can be slippery in wet conditions.
- Scenery: On a clear day, the views are breathtaking, overlooking Madeira’s mountain ridges and coastline.
Important Notes:
- Prepare for unpredictable weather: conditions can change quickly as you gain altitude.
- Waterproof gear is a must: we faced heavy drizzle and rain at the top.
- Wear sturdy hiking shoes: the path is rocky and can be slippery.
- Expect colder temperatures at the summit: even if it’s warm at lower elevations, the peak can be very chilly.
- Visibility can be poor in foggy conditions.
Despite the challenging weather, hiking to Pico Ruivo is an unforgettable experience. If you’re lucky with clear skies, you’ll get some of the best views in Madeira. But if conditions are rough, come well-prepared and embrace the adventure!
