Haystacks starting from Gatesgarth Farm. The way up starts out with clear and relatively easy paths but gets a little more challenging as you approach the top, especially in misty conditions (wet stones). There’s a few sections near the top where you have to search your own way and possibly use both hands and feet, but we managed with both kids sound asleep on our back and fully confident, so it’s still very doable. The views are magnificent throughout (even when covered in fog), but while the ascent and the first part of the descent are fun, the way down quickly gets tedious after you cross the river. The loose gravel path isn’t difficult necessarily but does require a lot of focus and just goes on for a little too long. Other than that: a very fun and rewarding hike!
Note: we wouldn’t recommend doing this hike in the opposite direction. The way up is steeper and looked quite tricky to navigate downhill - at least in foggy/wet conditions. Other than that, we assume the gravel path would be even more tedious going uphill.
