As of September 2017, many paths leading to Mt.Aso and Kishimadake are closed since the last earthquake and eruption in 2016, including the ropeway and the volcano pit.
Taking the bus from Aso Station, for 570 Yen to the Museum, start walking south between the ponds and through the high pastures. The path is overgrown with shrubs but walkable.
The views from the top are amazing including the puffing volvano.
The way back to town is very comforting too. Treat yourself in the Yumenoyu Onsen next to the station. (Discount price through Aso Base Hostel).
