This route is very similar to Cuffley and Northaw Great Wood Loop v3 but in an anti- clockwise direction, with Home Wood and Northaw Great Wood in the first part.
From Cuffley Station, go along Tolmers Road then through Home Wood. Leave Home Wood and turn left along Carbone Hill then turn right into Northaw Great Wood along a concrete path passing Second World War tank traps. Go into the 121 hectare (300 acre) Northaw Great Wood then take a folded loop route along about 5 km of woodland paths.
The Wood is a remnant of the extensive forest that covered much of the area before 1066. It is now a Country Park and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with Oak, Birch and Hornbeam, with areas of Ash, Sycamore and Sweet Chestnut along with a variety of flora and fauna.
After leaving the wood, go along the Ridgeway then take the Hertfordshire Way and other public footpaths back to Cuffley Station.
About 75% of the route is on traffic-free footpaths with 25% on roads with footway or verge. Total distance 8.2 miles (13.2 km) with some small hills, total 143 metres (470 ft) ascent and descent.
