I changed my original plan to drive higher and walk to Rifugio Croce di Marone as the road was narrow and busy with mountain bikers. I chose this alternative route to try and gain some altitude and complete a circular route. The path through the woods was narrow and very steep in parts and when I gained the ridge it was obvious that it was going to be quite a challenging route with many ups and downs on the narrow path but only occasional views as it looked like it would stay mainly in the trees. For that reason I turned back on myself and retraced to the start which meant coming down the steepest section again, very hard on my 62 year old knees!
