Descrizione dell'itinerario

Simple hike at Nanatsu-ishi in Okutama.

We originally planned to go all the way to Kumotori-yama (highest mountain of Tokyo prefecture) but had to shorten the trip due to the the time constraint.

We started from Minetani bus stop (Ride JR Ome line from Tachikawa 6:39 -> 7:46 thenbus 14 leaves from Okutama station at 7:55) and finished at Fukayamabashi bus stop.

The start of the hike follows a forest road and there are several shortcuts on the way but some of those are very misleading and in the end we lost our way several times. The gps was partly to blame since the track I downloaded actually followed a closed track, but also quickly made us realized we were following the wrong route. The lack of signs would make it difficult for someone with just map and compass.

Due to the sudden wave of warm air and sustained rained 2 days earlier most of the snow melted and subsequently froze once the temperature dropped. For this reason most of the way up to Nanatsu-ishi was covered in ice. I had the strange experience to lose grip while walking down a very slight slope (not even 5 degrees) and I couldn't stop and decided to let go and slide on my butt with absolutely no means to slow down. Hopefully it was a very wide road and the icy stretch quite short.

After reaching the hiking trail we walked as much as we could without crampons until it became to risky. The trail is technically vey easy but the amount of ice was too much for normal people to handle without crampons.

Even upon reaching the top of Nanatsu-ishi there was very little snow but the icy parts together with the time lost on the wrong trails contributed to making the ascent much longer than expected.

Most of the trail is trough the woods and we could get views of the surrounding mountains only around the final ridge.

We then decided to go down to Kamosawa bus stop from Nanatsu-ishi, along the most commonly used trail in the area: Nobori ridge. This trail turned out to be much more agreeable than what I expected (usually the more people use a hiking trail the more stairs there are and the more boring it is). The trail has no steep parts and is straightforward and accessible to anyone.

Overall this hike is accessible to anyone as long as there is no snow / ice.
